When deciding on what type of biological indicator (BI) to use, you must consider the requirements of each type of BI. A Spore Strip consists of an inoculated paper carrier within a glassine sealed pouch. This type of indicator requires the user to aseptically transfer the paper carrier into growth media to complete the test. To accomplish this, the user must utilize a laminar flow hood and good aseptic technique.
A self-contained (SCBI) biological indicator, as its name suggests, is a complete unit, requiring no special lab work or equipment. Simply expose the unit to the sterilization process and activate by simply squeezing the sides of the unit releasing the growth media. This can be done without the aid of specialized equipment and even in an office type setting.
Both types of indicators offer distinct advantages however it is very important to understand the specific needs of each type before making any purchasing decisions. If you would like some help in deciding which BI is ideal for your processes, please contact Mesa Labs.
