Sonic Concentration Analyzers
Mesa Laboratories, Nusonics Division has a long history in the design and marketing of ultrasonic-based measurement instruments for industrial applications. These instruments are all based on the principle that the velocity of sound through a liquid medium can be used to determine certain physical and chemical characteristics. All of the Nusonics instruments consist of a transducer assembly that is used to produce and detect the ultrasonic pulse and a transmitter that provides the associated electronics and communication capability. The primary applications of the Nusonics ultrasonic technology are:
- Flowmeters - Measurement of liquid flow for water, food and chemical processes
- Sonic Concentration Monitors - Measurement of the chemical composition of a liquid
- Pipeline Interface Detectors - Determination of the interface between two different products being transported through a petroleum pipeline
Now, you can take advantage of ultrasound technology for your critical process measurements. The Nusonics' Sonic Concentration Monitors (SCM) utilize ultrasound to measure the concentration of a chemical constituent in a liquid medium. Nusonics provides 2 different models to choose from, one for laboratory based measurements and one for process applications. They both have the advantage of being highly accurate and extremely rugged, providing years of reliable service.
Model 87 Lab Analyzer
The Model 87 is a lab adaptation of the NuSonics line of Sonic Concentration Monitors, used in both industry and research for over twenty years. Employing acoustic technology, the Model 87 continuously samples the sound velocity and temperature of a liquid and produces a concentration output based on those measurements.

Model 86 Sonic Concentration Monitor
Mesa Laboratories, Inc., Nusonics Model 86 SCM determines liquid concentration by measuring sound velocity. The sound velocity of any liquid is unique! The relationship between sound velocity, liquid concentration and temperature is different for every liquid. Once the relationship is known, sound velocity can be used to monitor changes in liquid concentration, often with much greater resolution than can be realized with other measuring instruments. It is this precision that makes the Model 86 SCM such a desirable process monitor because it can detect small changes in concentration that could otherwise be missed. Typically the resolution ranges from 0.005 to 0.05 weight percent of the actual concentration.
